Why plant churches among the poor & unreached?
This conversation with God this morning was different. Maybe they are changing? It is more of a blending of my thoughts and His…
Why should wealthy churches and wealthy individuals be concerned with planting and growing churches among the poor and unreached in their cities? Why indeed. The life of Jesus was spent among the poor, and among the sick – physically and spiritually. Knowing this, where should our lives be spent? Why do you think you were given this wealth? For your own enjoyment? For your own amusement? So you could sit at the top of the hill and look down on all others? The wealthy are at risk and must be very careful: It is easier for a camel to walk through the eye of a needle than for the rich to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Be very wary of your riches, they could be your doom. As James wrote, do not let your gathered riches stand as evidence against you on the day of judgment. Seek Godly and creative ways to be rid of it! Jesus’ mission for us was clear: Go and make disciples…baptizing them (evangelism)…and teaching them all I have commanded (discipleship). In Birmingham, a place full of churches, almost none of them, regardless of location or primary ethnicity, have as part of their active mission the evangelism, discipleship, and drawing into the church body the poor and unreached. We cannot keep pouring new wine into old wineskins. We need new churches infused with this mission and purpose. Let’s get to work, church of the One True God. Let’s get to work.
