Is “White Privilege” a Real Thing?

All of God’s people experience Him differently.  I often experience the Holy Spirit in a conversation, and recently He led me to start posting some of our conversations.  I speak in italics, and our Lord in bold print.  Please click here to read about how this series came to be.

Is White Privilege a Real Thing?

Of course it is.

What is it?

It is the privilege that comes with power.  It is the privilege that the Egyptians held over the Hebrews; the Jews over the Canaanites; the Assyrians over the people of Israel; the Babylonians over the people of Judea; the Persians over the Babylonians; the Greeks over the Persians; the Romans over pretty much everyone; and so on.  And for the past 500 years, this privilege that comes with power has been held by Europeans, Caucasians…and they have tended to look out for each other and subjugate other races (or at least treat as less than).  But there is nothing unique about “whites” in this regard.  In a world ruled by Satan, power has tended to be consolidated along racial or tribal lines.  Egyptians looked out for Egyptians; Jews for Jews; Persians for Persians; Romans for Romans…and Whites for Whites.  The Enemy has put tremendous resource into racial division from the very beginning.  

But the gospel disrupts all of this division and tribalism and unifies all people under the banner of Christ.  Under Christ, there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free.  In Him, those from every nation, race, and language will gather together to worship and live as family.  So yes, “white privilege” exists, but “whites” are not uniquely evil in history.  They have simply represented the power of the moment.  But it is fleeting, as power in this world always has been.  Their power is already crumbling, and as has always been the case when a vacuum in power exists there is a chaotic scramble to fill it.  And someone will, and eventually a new “privilege” will arise.  But do not drown yourself in these things.  They are fleeting and passing away.  Build my eternal family that is brimming with sons and daughters from every nation, tribe, race, and tongue.
