Why Do the Poor Have a Special Place in Your Heart?

All of God’s people experience Him differently.  I often experience the Holy Spirit in a conversation, and recently He led me to start posting some of our conversations.  I speak in italics, and our Lord in bold printclick here to read about how this series came to be.

Why Do the Poor Have a Special Place in Your Heart

The poor embody outwardly what all people in this world are born into inwardly.  Because of sin, all people are born with a poverty, an extreme deficiency, of soul.  All are born hungry and thirsty in a way that, in a fallen world, can never be satisfied.  So all are born starving, thirsty, cold, naked, exposed, imprisoned, and desperate.  And regardless of your superficial status in life, materially and experientially, this is how we stumble through life, wandering in the dark, cold and hungry and alone.

This is why all who know me identify with the poor…they see themselves, who they once were before being bathed in the riches of Heaven, filled with the food and wine of Christ Himself, adopted and made heirs in a powerful and eternal family.  They look at the poor and have compassion, because they see what they once were and what could have been their eternal destiny had someone not stepped out of their wealthy and powerful zip code to make Himself poor that others might live in wealth and glory forever.  This is the very nature of Christ – to abandon privilege for a time, to impoverish one’s self, that others may live abundant life.  This is why “if you have done it for the least of these, you have done it unto me.
